Aftersun
On a budget Turkish package holiday, an 11-year-old girl films her gentle, broke young father on a camcorder, not yet seeing the despair he hides behind every game and lesson.
> A handprint of sunscreen. A father you can't quite reach.
> Some holidays you only finish watching years later.
> Rewind the tape. He's still smiling. He's still leaving.
Synopsis
Late 1990s. Calum, a soft-spoken father not yet thirty-one, takes his daughter Sophie on a cheap week at a half-built Turkish resort, his right arm still in a plaster cast from a fall. Sophie, eleven and watchful in her oversized t-shirts and No Fear cap, records the trip on a DV camcorder: the pool, the chips, her dad practicing slow Tai Chi in elevator doors. They share a Walkman headphone, a single hotel bed, and a private shorthand of jokes. But the camera keeps catching what Sophie cannot yet read. Calum smokes alone on a scaffolded balcony, soaks his cast until it bleeds, spits at his own reflection in angled mirrors, and tells a stranger he's surprised he made it to thirty. Sophie, meanwhile, drifts toward older teenagers and a boy named Michael, edging across the threshold of adolescence. Woven through it all, an adult Sophie searches a strobe-lit rave for the man on the tape. A tender, quietly devastating study of how much of a parent a child is allowed to know, and how late the understanding arrives.
Themes
The unknowability of a parent
Calum is loving and present in every frame Sophie films, yet he hides the rest: alone, he perches on a balcony railing over a three-story drop, and confides to the dive instructor Onur that he can't picture himself at forty. Sophie has the footage but not the meaning.
Memory and the limits of looking back
The whole holiday is framed as playback. The film opens mid-rewind on grainy DV footage that blurs past and clicks to play, and the camera itself is Sophie's instrument, so every joyful moment arrives already past tense, watched rather than lived.
Hidden depression behind tenderness
The brightest gestures sit beside the darkest privacy. Calum smooths sunscreen onto Sophie's back leaving a faint handprint, then later soaks his casted arm until blood disperses in the bucket, and lies in a rising bath with a cloth domed over his mouth.
The threshold between childhood and adolescence
Sophie watches from the edges of a world she doesn't yet inhabit. She spies through a missing-lock cubicle on teenagers trading explicit gossip, idolizes the older pool-table crowd, and circles a first flirtation with Michael over the arcade motorbikes.
Distance and connection ('we share the same sky')
Lying in identical poses by the pool, Sophie tells Calum she likes that they share the same sky even when apart. The film answers her across decades: an adult Sophie reaching for him through a crowd she can never quite cross.
Scope at a Glance
approx. 16-22
The pressure points are two child-adjacent performers carrying nearly every scene, extensive underwater and pool photography (breath-holds, scuba with a live seahorse, a sinking-mask POV), a rigged three-story balcony stunt, a strobe-cued two-performer body swap repeated across nine rave passes, and a heavy DV-cam playback grade threaded through the whole shoot.
Atmosphere
This is a film built out of a tape. It opens on a strobe that swaps a 31-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl in and out of the same spot in a packed crowd, then settles into grainy DV footage of an airport queue rewinding and clicking back to play. Everything that follows carries that texture of footage being watched back: overexposed poolside video where Calum has to explain the camera's auto-exposure trick, a faux-reporter tour of the dive boat, a frozen DV grin that dissolves into purple-blue dusk under the main title. The air is humid, off-season, half-finished. Their hotel is the scaffolded Türk, where dawn arrives as the clang of metal on scaffolding and a drill starting up again, directly across the street from the upscale Ocean Park Resort they keep crossing the narrow path to reach. The light is high Mediterranean sun, sunburn and sun cream and the hand print Calum leaves on Sophie's back, then later his own back peeling in the shape of that print. The pace is patient and watchful, built from a child's vantage. Sophie spies through a missing-lock hole at teenagers trading gossip, studies the strap-marks and the warm strip of sweat Laura leaves on a plastic stool, grips the arcade motorbike's handlebars while older teens roughhouse behind her. The camera lets scenes breathe and trusts the viewer to read what Sophie cannot: that the father flipping her upside down by the heels and dabbing cleanser on her closed eyelids is the same man perched on the balcony railing with his legs over a three-story drop. Tenderness and dread occupy the same frame, often the same shot. Wide two-shots span the bedroom and bathroom so Sophie can ask a magazine question while, feet away, Calum hacks at his cast with nail scissors and blood disperses in the bucket. What lingers a week later is not plot but pressure and water. Calum lying in the bathtub as the level rises around his chest. A wet cloth domed over his mouth as he breathes in. The seahorse coiling its tail around Sophie's finger while her father, reflected in her mask, photographs her. The slowed rave dropping to a quarter speed until his face is ashen and dripping and looks like death, intercut with the same disco light bathing the Türk Hotel dance floor while a younger Calum, emphatically alive, pulls a mortified Sophie toward the crowd. The film withholds the thing it is grieving and lets you assemble it from a dead battery passed up a coach, a man crossing the road into a near-miss with a bus, a confession to a dive instructor that he can't see himself at 40. It ends in residue. A cigarette end forgotten on the roof edge below their room. A lost diving mask still sinking toward the dark. A fallen stack of postcards revealing one that reads only, "I love you very much. Never forget that." A hose left gushing on the ground beside a lost bag swallowed into greenery. Hold the textures that recur: red digital clock glow at 3:07 muffled under a thrown t-shirt that slides back to the floor, a luminous green wristband wriggled off a drunk teenager's wrist and onto a child's, mud smeared in stripes across a face, sodium-vapour light tracing a Turkish carpet's pattern in a New York apartment years later.
Tonal Descriptors
Reference Points
the dignity and melancholy of ordinary holiday colour, plastic chairs and pool-deck red, the everyday lit like it matters.
flat turquoise water and figures submerged in chlorinated light, the surface that both reflects and hides.
the actual grain, auto-exposure bloom, and rewind artifacts, used as a built-in second camera and emotional filter, not a gimmick.
for the rave: warping a body's movement until ecstatic dancing curdles into something desperate and unreachable.
flash-close proximity to people in private, tender and exposed states, including the kiss between two boys glimpsed through a cracked door.
two angled mirrors multiplying a man to the horizon as he spits at his own reflection, a tool for showing self-loathing without a word.
Music & Sound
The film is mostly quiet, and that quiet is load-bearing. Long stretches carry only room tone and the environment: the construction drilling that opens each Türk morning, the in-camera rumble and bleed of a PA announcement on the plane, a too-loud hotel phone that makes Calum drop the camera so it records nothing but wrinkled sheets. Two people share one Walkman headphone on a coach; later they lie side by side on sun beds, each lost in a separate track, the score refusing to unify them. When score does arrive it should feel like an emotion surfacing involuntarily rather than underlining a beat. Sound is also where the film hides its dread: rave music fades in slowed and warped through water as Calum sinks alone in scuba gear, and at the rave's deepest point the music drops to a quarter speed with the pitch falling out from under it. The needle-drops are diegetic and period-specific, and they do the heavy lifting at the ruptures. Blur's "Tender" plays unbroken across a seven-scene sequence (78 through 84) that tucks Sophie in, follows Calum out to the NOIZ nightclub and a kiss in silhouette, passes through the rave, and lands on an empty corridor looking out at uncertain lights. Sophie sings R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion" alone on the karaoke stage, waving for Calum to join, enduring the whole song growing self-conscious as he refuses, a pivotal rupture played entirely through one performed song. Smaller cues mark texture and time: the resort's lounge entertainer Tony crooning "Time goes by so slowly," the intro of All Saints' "Never Ever" as Laura passes on her wristband, Sophie humming "Feeling hot, hot, hot" into a wetsuit. When music stays out, let objects and bodies sound. The clang of scaffolding, the rewind-whir of a MiniDV tape, the drip of blood into a bucket the script marks twice as "Drop. Drop." A crowd at the ancient amphitheatre singing "For he's a jolly good fellow" up to a Calum hidden in shade, the song carrying over into the next scene where, alone and naked with his back to camera, he sobs. Let language carry warmth too: a mangled "Torremolinos," a coached Turkish "teşekkür ederim," the deadpan "told a porky pie."
Soundtrack References
borrow the restraint, sparse piano and held tones that let two people sit in distance and ellipsis without scoring the ache for them.
for memory's involuntary swell, music that floods in like a recovered image rather than a cue, then withdraws.
fragile, dissolving electronics under a son reaching for a lost parent, the exact texture for the dream-rave passages.
steal the method, not the score: a Scottish girl's interior life built almost entirely from diegetic tracks on a Walkman.
Color Palette
the high-factor lotion print on Sophie's back that becomes the hand-shaped sunburn on Calum's, the holiday's tenderness written on skin.
the disco light on the Türk dance floor and the rave that share a colour, the hinge where joy and the adult dream-grief collapse into one space.
the covered pool's glow under Sophie's first kiss and the chlorinated water she keeps submerging into, breath held, eyes forced open.
the purple-blue dusk under the main title and the dark sea Calum wades into in his boxers, the film's recurring blue of arrival and disappearance.
the deep dark Calum descends into alone in scuba gear and the cut to black when he vanishes from the rave, the negative space the footage keeps falling into.
Similar Moods
the same ache of distance and what is irretrievable, two people in a room unable to close the gap between them.
a child's bright, oblivious play staged inches from an adult's quiet collapse, both held in the same sun-soaked frame.

sun-bleached holiday melancholy and a young Scottish interior life soundtracked by a personal stereo, beauty shadowed by an offscreen death.

- S24Laughing hysterically and hand in hand, they sprint across the street; Sophie trips and Calum scoops her up and carries her into the Türk Hotel.
- S41As Sophie tears through the 'she sells sea shells' tongue twister, Calum lifts his shirt to reveal the red, hand-print-shaped sunburn on his back.
- S59To a loud honk, Calum crosses the road nonchalantly, narrowly missing a departing tour bus.
- S122Moonlight glints off the distant ocean as Calum and Sophie walk back toward their hotel and the sound of a party drifts in.

Key Visual Moments
- S9Waiting at the unmanned desk, Sophie leafs through a worn erotic paperback from the lobby table as the hotel dog flops at her feet.
- S10Sophie lies sprawled asleep and fully clothed on the single bed while Calum sits on its edge and picks up the phone.
- S11Hampered by his cast, Calum fumbles the knots of sleeping Sophie's laces, then freezes mid-stand clutching something he has just retrieved from a jacket pocket.
- S12On the scaffolded balcony Calum struggles to light a crumpled cigarette one-handed, then loses himself in his Walkman, arms loose, as if somewhere else.
- S13Calum sits perched on the balcony railing, legs dangling over a three-story drop, watched from inside through a gap in the curtains.
- S14At dawn the clang of metal on scaffolding and drilling begins again as a hotel employee opens up the poolside sun beds.
- S15Sophie still clothed and Calum in boxers lie in identical face-down positions, arms above their heads, as building work drones outside.
- S16On overexposed DV cam, Sophie tries to surf-stand on a lilo in the pool, topples, then flips it and submerges herself fully.
- S17Sophie holds her breath underwater, eyes forced open, as the empty lilo floats above her and Calum's voice calls down.
- S18Calum carefully smooths high-factor lotion onto Sophie's back, leaving a faint hand print, while the Portuguese family sets up across the pool.
- S25Awake on the narrow fold-out bed, Calum rewinds and rewatches Sophie's DV-cam tribute, then throws a t-shirt over the red glow of the 3:07 clock; it slides back to the floor.
- S27Calum lies in the bathtub as the shower beats down on his chest and the water level slowly rises around him.
- S28A wet cloth over his face, Calum breathes in until a concave dome forms over his mouth, a makeshift meditation interrupted by Sophie's knock.
- S37What looks like a real struggle is Calum gravely teaching Sophie a wrist-release self-defense move, pulling free a little too forcefully.
- S38Calum gently dabs face cleanser onto Sophie's closed eyelids as she sits cross-legged, asking why the self-defense matters.
- S39Underwater, Calum photographs Sophie holding her breath, then poses for her before they rise together, legs treading water in frame.
- S40Lying in identical poses with arms shielding their eyes, Sophie tells Calum she likes that they 'share the same sky' even when apart.
- S44Calum perches on the tub edge soaking his casted arm in a bucket, peeling away a loosening strip of plaster as Sophie asks if it hurt when he fell.
- S45On the bed with the untouched gift book at her side, Sophie flips a teen magazine and asks Calum, off in the bathroom, why he and Mum still say 'love you.'
- S46Hacking at the cast with tiny nail scissors, Calum cuts himself; blood streams down his arm and disperses in the bucket against the dissolving plaster.
- S47In a wide two-shot spanning bedroom and bathroom, Sophie reluctantly opens the gift book while Calum stares down at blood dropping into the bucket.
- S61Dressed for the evening but not really reading her magazine, Sophie admits to Calum through the wall that she feels 'a bit down or something.'
- S62Between angled mirrors that multiply his image to infinity, Calum abruptly spits at his own reflection as Sophie describes the feeling of crashing and sinking.
- S63Sunrise light creeps into the bathroom revealing the spit, now dried, on the mirror over the sound of distant drilling.
- S68In the post-lunch hush over the empty pool, Calum reluctantly lets Sophie go off with the older teens for an hour as Andréa and Marcia play nearby.
- S70Calum practices Tai Chi in the bedroom trying to hold onto calm, fails, grabs his wallet, and leaves.
- S76Tidying the room alone, Sophie hides a risqué cocktail stirrer between an activity book and the erotic novel she took from the lobby, secreting away her grown-up finds.
- S77Sophie interviews Calum on DV cam playing on the TV, asking what he thought at 11 he'd be doing at 31; he sits at the edge of frame, only his lower body visible, and won't answer.
- S78Over a beer and a worn chess set on the busy balcony, Calum lets Sophie take a huge winced gulp as she asks if he'll ever move back to Scotland.
- S79Calum holds Sophie in a tight hug, her legs wrapped around his waist, telling her he never really felt like he belonged in Edinburgh.
- S80Tucking Sophie in, Calum tells her she can live wherever she wants and be whoever she wants as the camera pans across to his empty bed.
- S81Calum passes the families laughing at the bar and pool on his way out into the night.
- S84The camera tracks down an empty hotel corridor past closed doors to an opening that looks out over the dark street, glimmering with uncertain lights.
- S85Under a bright blue sky the empty pool is marked only by early risers' beach towels as the hotel dog chases its tail on the path between the two hotels.
- S86Calum stands tall and perfectly still on top of the balcony railing, his back to camera, facing the pool as paragliders fall in the sky above.
- S87Over breakfast a hollow-eyed Calum murmurs to himself; Sophie jokes about the 'three signs of madness' and turns his open palm over, finding it not hairy.
- S93Calum rewatches Sophie's 'one-armed Calum Aaron Patterson' DV tribute but doesn't smile this time; he snaps the screen shut and stands.
- S100Sophie stands outside the locked hotel room door knocking again and again, met only with silence.
- S101Sophie calls a small 'Hello?' into the empty reception, waits, and gets no answer.
- S102Through a cracked storage-hut door Sophie watches, entranced, as Toby and the redhead Alex kiss slowly, one hand cupped behind the other's head.
- S103Sophie has fallen asleep on the wicker-backed reception couch when the receptionist softly wakes her with a 'Miss.'
- S104Watched from a distance by the receptionist, Sophie slots the key card until the light flicks red then green and quietly pushes the handle down.
- S105Finding Calum sprawled naked across the bed taking heavy, uneven breaths, Sophie quietly drapes the sheet over him and drops onto the fold-out bed.
- S106The camera pushes in on Calum then pans down to the floor, transitioning on the movement.
- S109On DV cam, Calum films sleeping Sophie's quietly twitching eyelids until the too-loud phone rings; he drops the camera and it records only wrinkled sheets.
- S117Naked on the bed with his head in his hands and back to camera, Calum loses the fight against tears and sobs, his whole upper body convulsing.
- S118Sophie and the Portuguese sisters take turns stroking a stray kitten purring on Andréa's knee, the three of them giggling.
- S123A disco light bathes the Türk Hotel dance floor in the same colour as the rave as Calum, refusing to dance alone, pulls a mortified Sophie toward the crowd.
- S125On the dance floor Calum reappears, his face lit up and emphatically alive, beckoning Sophie, who lightheartedly says 'Stop' and pushes him off.
- S127Calum lifts Sophie by the arms and spins her around, her head pressed against his chest as she acquiesces for a second.
- S129Calum sets Sophie back on her feet, both faces euphoric, and she playfully pushes him off on the turn of the strobe.
- S136Calum's cigarette end rests forgotten on the roof edge of the floor below their room.
- S137An unattended hose gushes water on the ground while Sophie's lost bag blends unseen into the lush greenery.
- S138A fallen stack of postcards reveals one from Calum to Sophie reading simply: 'I love you very much. Never forget that.'

- S22Sophie grips the arcade motorbike's handlebars in fierce concentration while behind her the older teens roughhouse around the pool table.
- S23Mid-conversation about Calum's plans, the pair conspiratorially lob bread rolls toward the tour reps' stage show and sprint laughing for the exit.

- S71Sophie quietly cheats at pool, fishing the white ball back out of the pocket, then loses her nerve and returns it as the teens trade slang about 'snaking.'
- S72Sophie shoves Scott into the pool on cue, but hesitates a beat too long to join the spontaneous fully clothed plunge and jumps with a tentative 'Woooo!'

- S74Drenched and unnoticed, Sophie quietly slides out of the pool and leaves the group behind.

- S91After a rough day, Calum and Sophie eat dessert in heavy silence as entertainer Tony croons on stage and Calum questions why she's wearing her bikini.
- S92Sophie sings 'Losing My Religion' alone on the karaoke stage, waving for Calum to join her; he refuses, and she endures the whole song growing visibly self-conscious.
- S94Sophie hovers at the edge of the teens' drinking game; Olly barely turns to ask 'Where's your dad?' before going back to his shot, and she's left out.
- S95Drunk and leaving the next day, Laura wriggles the luminous green all-inclusive wristband off her own wrist and slips it onto Sophie's, the hairs on Sophie's arm standing on end.
- S96Lost in the dark grounds, Sophie is grabbed from behind and instinctively executes Calum's wrist-release move, throwing her attacker, Michael, flat on his back.
- S98Legs dangling in the turquoise glow of the covered pool, Sophie and Michael share a first kiss while, reflected in the water, six silhouettes peer down and drum on the skylight.

Poster Concepts
The Father Behind the Lens
“The man holding the camera is the one you can't quite see.”
A young father in his early thirties sits on the edge of a hotel balcony at dusk, holding a small camcorder up to one eye, pointed off-frame toward the viewer. We see most of his face but his expression is unreadable behind the device. His casted arm rests in his lap. Wide negative space of purple-blue sky above for title.
Girl at the Threshold
“She was old enough to watch and too young to understand.”
An eleven-year-old girl in an oversized t-shirt and a bucket cap pushed back, leaning against a tiled poolside wall, looking off-frame at something just out of view, half-lit by harsh holiday sun. Her face holds curiosity she can't name. Lower third left empty and blown-out white for title.
Two Sophies, One Strobe
“The same person, twenty years apart, reaching for the same man.”
A single packed dark crowd, frozen mid-strobe. In the same spot stand two figures overlapping at the edges: a small girl and a grown woman in a warm crew-neck jumper, both with eyes shut. The strobe whites out everything but their two faces. Pure black surround.
The Sinking Mask
A child's diving mask drifts downward through deep blue-green water, getting smaller, a reaching hand fading at the very top edge of the frame just failing to catch it. Most of the poster is empty deepening water below. Light rays thin out toward black.
Temporary Tattoo
“Some of what they leave on us only shows up later.”
A close crop of a man's sunburned back, where a pale hand-print is pressed into red, peeling skin: the negative shape left by sunscreen smoothed on by a smaller hand. Soft daylight. The print sits slightly off-center; clean skin and warm air fill the rest.
Three Matches Gone
“Count the small things and you start to see him.”
A flimsy hotel matchbook lying open on a bedside surface, three matches torn out and missing, the gaps obvious. Beside it, slightly out of focus, the faint red glow of a digital clock. Everything else dark, the small objects spotlit like evidence.
The Empty Railing
A man stands tall and perfectly still on top of a hotel balcony railing, back to camera, facing a calm pool far below at early dawn. Scaffolding frames one side. Above him, tiny paragliders drift down through a pale sky. He is small in a large, quiet, vertiginous frame.
Seahorse on a Fingertip
“For one held breath, the whole world was just the two of them.”
Underwater, a girl in a dive mask extends one finger; a tiny seahorse curls its tail around it. Behind her mask her eyes are wide with awe. Reflected faintly in the glass of her mask, a second masked figure photographs her. Soft blue gloom around them.
Karaoke Spotlight, Alone
“She sang the whole song waiting for him to stand up.”
A girl alone on a small resort amphitheatre stage, microphone in hand, caught in a single harsh spotlight, one arm half-raised waving toward an empty seat in the dark audience. The vast dark seating swallows everything else. A faint karaoke lyric glow off one edge.
Share the Same Sky
“Even apart, they were under the same one.”
An almost entirely empty pale sky. Far down in the lower edge, two figures lie flat side by side, arms shielding their eyes, tiny against the immensity above. A lone paraglider hangs high in the corner. The sky does almost all the work.
Rewind / Play
“A holiday filmed by an eleven-year-old, watched back by the woman she became.”
A black field carrying only the faint blue timecode and REC dot of a camcorder viewfinder overlay, with a barely-there grainy still of a girl pulling a face frozen behind it. The interface graphics are the design; the image is a ghost.
Never Forget That
“The plainest words he ever wrote her.”
A single tipped-over stack of holiday postcards on a dim hotel-room surface, only the top one face-up and legible, its handwritten message catching a sliver of light. The rest fan into shadow. Almost the whole frame is dark room and tabletop.
Aftersun Skin
No figures. A full-frame wash of late-afternoon holiday light: sun-pinked skin tones bleeding into bleached towel white and pool turquoise, soft and overexposed, like the warmth felt through closed eyelids on a sun bed. A faint blurred edge of a balcony rail bottom-corner anchors it.
The Drowning Dance
“Where the music ends and the memory begins.”
A blurred dark frame where rave-strobe violet and a hotel disco light bleed into the same color, a man's figure smeared mid-motion across the center, arms loose, almost dissolving. You can't tell if he is dancing or sinking. Heavy motion blur, deep black edges closing in.
The Tape, Replayed
“A whole summer, scrubbed back frame by frame.”
A loose vertical band of overlapping grainy DV-cam frames running through the center, like footage scrubbed back and forth: a girl at a plane window, a hand-print sunburn, an empty balcony railing, a seahorse, a karaoke stage, a sinking mask. At the bottom, an adult woman in a crew-neck jumper sits watching a small glowing TV, her back to us, the same frames reflected in the screen.
